Nous vous livrons ici un extrait de ce projet auquel nous tenons beaucoup et sur lequel un long travail de recherche puis de tournage aux Etats-Unis et en France a été mené. Nous avons besoin de l’aide de participants privés pour terminer ce beau projet initié en 2014.

Pollock & Pollockis a feature-length documentary by Isabelle Rèbre about a relatively unknown American painter, Charles Pollock, brother of the famous Jackson Pollock. You will find attached an excerpt of this film; it means a lot to us. We have spent a great deal of time on it, researching and filming in the United States and in France. We need the help of private participants to complete this wonderful project started in 2014.

POURQUOI NOUS PORTONS LE PROJET POLLOCK & POLLOCK ?

Je crois au regard d’Isabelle Rèbre, qui a déjà signé deux portraits de peintres. J’aime sa façon d’incarner leur présence, en s’intéressant d’abord à leur esprit et à leur engagement. Je suis touchée par la force et le romanesque de cette histoire, la trajectoire de ces deux frères, dans un monde dont ils sont emplis et qu’ils auraient voulu transformer par leur art.

A Perte de Vue est une société indépendante rennaise, qui défend un cinéma ambitieux et différent, longs métrages, courts métrages, documentaires de création. Nous travaillons avec la réalisatrice Isabelle Rèbre depuis 2011.

WHY ARE WE PRODUCING THE POLLOCK & POLLOCK FILM?

I believe in Isabelle Rèbre’s point of view, and in the visual portraits she has made of two other artists. I like her way of embodying their presence, by first focusing on their spirit and commitment. I am touched by the strength and romance of this story, the trajectory of these two brothers, in a world of which they are an active part and that they would have liked to transform through their art.

A Perte de Vue ("As far as the eye can see") is an independent company based in Rennes (Brittany, France). We defend an ambitious and different cinema, feature films, short films and creative documentaries. We have been working with the director Isabelle Rèbre since 2011.

POLLOCK & POLLOCK - LE FILM

Le film raconte l’histoire de deux frères, les peintres américains Charles et Jackson Pollock, avec pour paysage l’Histoire américaine, qu’ils ont cherché à transformer par leur art. Bien qu’éloignés, autant par leurs personnalités que par leurs œuvres, les Pollock sont liés par un nom, par la fraternité. Jackson, le benjamin, est mis sur la voie de la peinture par l’aîné, Charles, qui incarne pendant ses années de formation une figure de modèle. Une fois Jackson révélé sur la scène publique, Charles devient « le frère de » et devra faire avec ce poids. La trajectoire fulgurante de Jackson Pollock s’arrête net à 44 ans dans un accident de voiture. Il aura révolutionné la peinture et deviendra une icône, un mythe. Charles, quant à lui, poursuit toute sa vie une œuvre libre, à l’écart des marchés. C’est seulement aujourd’hui que ses œuvres sont vraiment vues. A travers les parcours de ces deux peintres, c’est une histoire de lumière et d’ombre que le film raconte.

POLLOCK & POLLOCK - THE FILM

The film tells the story of two brothers, the American painters Charles and Jackson Pollock, with, as background, a century of American history that they sought to transform through their art. Although very different, as much because of their personalities as through their works, the two Pollocks are linked by a name and by fraternity. Jackson, the youngest, was helped onto the path of painting by his oldest brother Charles, who embodied a model figure for him. Once Jackson was acclaimed as a painter, Charles became "the brother of" and lived with that epithet. The blazing trajectory of Jackson Pollock ended at the age of 44 in a car accident. He will have revolutionized painting and become an icon, a myth. Meanwhile Charles went on painting, far from the markets. It is only today that his works are being shown. Through the paths of these two painters, the film tells a story of (lime)light and shadow.

COMMENT EST NÉE L'IDÉE DU FILM ? par Isabelle Rèbre

Au printemps 2009, j’ai découvert Les lettres américaines, (LeRoy Pollock & ses fils, Lettres Américaines, Grasset 2009 puis en ré-édition :Jackson Pollock et sa famille,Lettres Américaines, Les Cahiers Rouges Grasset, 2017) : cent lettres extraites de la correspondance de la famille Pollock de 1929 à 1947. Derrière le nom de Jackson Pollock il existait une famille composée d’une fratrie de cinq frères, tous engagés à des degrés divers dans l’art et la politique. Ces lettres m’ont bouleversée par leur humanité et la façon dont leurs auteurs étaient en prise directe avec leur époque. J’ai réalisé un documentaire radiophonique pour France Culture mettant en avant la dimension historique et politique véhiculée par cette histoire. L’aîné des frères Pollock, Charles, était aussi peintre, et sa trajectoire, ses choix, radicalement différents de ceux de Jackson, m’ont interrogée. Son intégrité et sa fidélité à ses idéaux l’ont tenu éloigné du marché et de toute reconnaissance. J’ai découvert sa peinture à l’occasion de deux expositions et décidé de faire un film.

Charles a vécu les dix-sept dernières années de sa vie à Paris où toutes ses œuvres se trouvent aujourd’hui, dans le lieu où vit toujours son épouse, Sylvia Winter Pollock qui, avec leur fille Francesca, a créé les Archives Charles Pollock. J’ai plongé dans l’immense correspondance, fait des recherches à New York et rencontré des témoins qui m’ont ouvert l’accès à des documents inédits. Aux Archives, j’ai assisté à la sortie des placards de dizaines d’œuvres et à leur départ pour l’exposition organisée en 2015 par la Collection Peggy Guggenheim à Venise. Avec Sylvia et Francesca Pollock j’ai tissé un lien de confiance et d’amitié.

ABOUT THE IDEA OF THIS FILM... by Isabelle Rèbre

In the spring of 2009, I discovered the American Letters, (LeRoy Pollock & ses fils, Lettres Américaines, Grasset, 2009 published in 2010 by Polity as Jackson Pollock & Family, American Letters) a hundred letters from the correspondence of the Pollock family from 1929 to 1947. Behind the name Jackson Pollock, there was a family consisting of five brothers, all engaged to various degrees in art and politics. These letters touched me by their humanity and the way in which their authors were in direct contact with their times. I made a radio documentary for France Culture highlighting the historical and political dimension conveyed by this story. The oldest of the Pollock brothers, Charles, was also a painter, and his trajectory, his choices, radically different from those of Jackson interested me. His integrity and loyalty to his ideals kept him away from the market and thus, from recognition. I discovered his painting on the occasion of two exhibitions and decided to make a film.

Charles lived the last seventeen years of his life in Paris and his works are there, in the place where his wife, Sylvia Winter Pollock, and their daughter Francesca created the Charles Pollock Archives. I immersed myself in the enormous correspondence, did research in New York and met with people who gave me access to unpublished documents. At the Archives, I watched dozens of works come out and leave them for an exhibition organized in 2015 by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. With Sylvia and Francesca Pollock, I wove a bond of trust and friendship.

INTENTIONS POUR LE FILM par Isabelle Rèbre

Pollock & Pollock est mon troisième film autour de la peinture et mon premier long métrage documentaire. Faire un film sur la peinture est peut-être une des choses les plus difficiles qui soit et soulève un abîme de questions. Le tableau ouvre le spectateur à un infini, comment le cinéma pourrait-il rivaliser avec sa force ?

Ce projet sur les frères Pollock s’inscrit dans la ville de New York qui fonctionne comme une métaphore. Nous avons choisi, avec mon chef opérateur Emilien Awada d’élaborer des « plans tableaux ». Ce choix fondamental dans le film d’une plasticité de l’image se rapproche du travail des peintres dont la force consiste à nous faire voir le monde sous un jour radicalement autre. Cette mise à distance du réel est finalement une manière de l’interroger.

Dans ce film, je pars aussi du trésor que constituent les lettres de la correspondance de la famille Pollock. Les mots des frères et de leurs proches sont l’essentiel du matériau narratif. Il s’agit de les faire exister à travers leur langue qui revèle leur intériorité profonde, leur musique.

Nous avons retrouvé les lieux où les frères ont vécu, soixante ans plus tôt. Il s’agit de trouver des échos entre présent et passé, à travers des éléments signifiants. Au montage, chaque lettre est mise en rapport avec la rue où elle a été écrite.

Une musique originale a été composée par Olivier Mellano pour un piano et une batterie. Nous voulons faire évoluer les moments-clefs des vies de Charles et Jackson Pollock entre deux énergies : l’ombre et la lumière, la spontanéité et le raisonnement, le mouvement et l'immobilité, la tension ou l'apaisement.

INTENTIONS FOR THE FILM by Isabelle Rèbre

Pollock & Pollock is my third film about painting and my first feature documentary. Making a film about painting is extremely difficult and raises an abyss of questions. The painting opens the viewer to an infinity, how can cinema compete with its strength?

This project on the Pollock brothers mostly takes place in the city of New York that works as a metaphor. We have chosen, with my chief operator Emilien Awada to develop "blueprints." This fundamental choice in the film of a plasticity of the image is close to the work of painters whose strength is to make us see the world in a radically different light. This distancing of reality is ultimately a way of questioning it.

In this film, I also start with the treasure that is the correspondence of the Pollock family. The words of the brothers and their relatives are the main part of the narrative material. It is a question of making them exist through their language which reveals their deep interiority, their music.

We found the places where the brothers had lived sixty years earlier. It is a question of finding echoes between present and past, through signifying elements. In editing, each letter is related to the street where it was written.

Original music was composed by Olivier Mellano for a piano and a drums. We wanted to bring out key moments in the lives of Charles and Jackson Pollock between two energies: shadow and light, spontaneity and reasoning, motion and stillness, tension or appeasement.
