Gwen Sampé-Harry Swift Duo Album

Au cours des dernières années, Harry et moi-même avons recherché et arrangé la musique de Billy Strayhorn, collaborateur de Duke Ellington qui reste trop peu connu du grand public. Compositeur, arrangeur, pianiste et parolier, Strayhorn a travaillé dans l'ombre du grand Ellington. De cette collaboration naîtront vite quelques joyaux comme, Daydream, Chelsea Bridge, Satin Doll et le légendaire Take the A Train, qui ont été écrits par Strayhorn.

Ellington le décrivait avec une profonde affection : « Billy Strayhorn était mon bras droit, mon bras gauche, les yeux derrière ma tête, mes ondes cérébrales dans son esprit, et les siennes dans le mien ».

Avec cet album, nous souhaitons mettre en lumière non seulement les œuvres les plus célèbres de Strayhorn, mais aussi certains de ses joyaux moins connus, comme Strange Feeling et Serenata.

Le défi a été de traduire les arrangements orchestraux de Strayhorn dans un format intimiste ; voix et contrebasse. Cela nous a amené à aborder la musique d'une manière plus personnelle et dépouillée.

Nous avons commencé à nous produire sur scène avant de décider que nous étions prêts à enregistrer. Les pistes sont maintenant posées, mais il reste encore beaucoup à faire en termes de finalisation, de mixage, de mastering et d’édition.

Le travail en duo a été à la fois exaltant et stimulant mais aussi incroyablement gratifiant. La musique a évolué vers quelque chose d'unique et de profondément personnel. La partager avec un public plus large semble être l'aboutissement naturel de ce voyage.

Gwen Sampé 

est une chanteuse de jazz pour qui l'improvisation n'est pas seulement une technique, mais un élément essentiel et indissociable de son univers musical. Issue d'une famille de chanteurs de Houston, au Texas, son approche du jazz est à la fois profondément ancrée dans la tradition et résolument contemporaine. Avec un style audacieux et surprenant, elle apporte une énergie nouvelle à chaque représentation.

Outre son travail de chanteuse de jazz, Gwen a mis en scène et joué dans des pièces de théâtre contemporaines, notamment dans son one-woman-show autoproduit « From the Cotton Fields to the Concert Hall », joué pour la première fois en Italie.

Diplômée de la Guildhall School of Music and Drama de Londres, les talents créatifs de Gwen s'étendent également au théâtre, où elle a dirigé et composé la musique de «Turnings », inspiré  de Wole Soyinka. En 1990, elle est entrée dans l'histoire en devenant la première femme à interpréter Dieu dans «Noye's Fludde» de Benjamin Britten. Quatre ans plus tard, elle rejoint l'Ariya Opera Company dans «Dido and Aeneas» de Henry Purcell.

Gwen a sorti son premier album,  « Water Gazing », en 2002, un mélange de compositions originales et de standards de jazz. Son deuxième album, « Conversions » (2014), est le fruit d'une collaboration avec le pianiste Jobic Le Masson.

Au fil des ans, Gwen a eu le privilège de se produire avec des musiciens de renom tels que John Betsch, Peter Giron, Bobby Few, Jobic Le Masson, Harry Swift, John Stevens, Dudu Pukwana, Bheki Mseleku et Aldridge Hansberry. Elle a également travaillé avec les chorégraphes Elsa Wolliaston et Mehdi Farajpour.

Outre sa carrière musicale, Gwen écrit également des poèmes. Son premier recueil, « Flowers for My Hair », sera bientôt publié.

Harry Swift

est un contrebassiste, compositeur et arrangeur, né en Angleterre, il découvre à l’âge de 15 ans la musique de Charles Mingus qui ne cessera de le passionner.

Harry vit à Paris depuis les années 80, musicien autodidacte, il perfectionne sa pratique de l’instrument auprès de contrebassistes-enseignants prestigieux tels que Jacques Cazauran et François Rabbath.

Pendant près de 35 ans, Harry devient le complice et contrebassiste du pianiste Bobby Few, qu’il accompagne dans plusieurs de ses formations : du duo au septet, et surtout en trio avec le batteur Ichiro Onoe. Il joue également avec Steve Lacy, Kirk Lightsey, Mal Waldron, Bill Hardman, Sunny Murray, Joe Lee Wilson, Alain Jean-Marie, Noah Howard, Jalal Nuriddin, Ricky Ford, Benny Golson …

Parmi ses projets actuels, un duo avec la chanteuse Gwen Sampé autour des compositions de Billy Strayhorn et un quartet avec Jon Handelsman, Jobic Le Masson et Ichiro Onoe.

Over the past few years, Harry and I have been researching and arranging the music of Billy Strayhorn—a collaborator of Duke Ellington who remains too little known to the general public. For almost 3 decades Billy Strayhorn, jazz composer, arranger  lyricist, worked in the shadow of the great Ellington. Quiet and mild-mannered, his contribution to the Ellington sound was however indispensable. Many of the iconic compositions we associate with Ellington, such as Daydream, Chelsea Bridge, Satin Doll, and the legendary Take the ‘A’ Train, were written by Strayhorn. And of course, there’s the unforgettable Lush Life.

Ellington described him with deep affection: “Billy Strayhorn was my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brain waves in his head, and his in mine.”

With this album, we aim to spotlight not only Strayhorn’s more famous works, but also some of his lesser-known gems, like Strange Feeling and Serenata.

The challenge has been translating Strayhorn’s orchestral arrangements into a format that works for the intimacy of voice and bass. This led us to approach the music in a more personal, stripped-down way. We began performing live before deciding we were ready to record.

The tracks are now laid down, but there’s still much to be done in terms of finalizing, mixing, mastering, and publishing.

Gwen Sampé is a jazz singer for whom improvisation is not just a technique but an essential, indespensible part of her musical soundscape. Born into a family of singers in Houston, Texas, her approach to jazz is both deeply rooted in tradition and unapologetically contemporary. With a daring and surprising style, she brings a fresh energy to every performance.

Gwen’s artistic background is rich and diverse. In addition to her work as a jazz singer, she has directed and performed in contemporary theater, including her self-produced one-woman show, ‘From the Cotton Fields to the Concert Hall,” which was first performed in Italy.

She holds an AGSM from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Gwen's creative talents also extend to theater, where she directed and composed the music for “Turnings,” a performance piece based on Wole Soyinka’s “A Shuttle in the Crypt,”  In 1990, she made history as the first woman to portray God in Benjamin Britten's “Noye’s Fludde,”. Four years later, she joined the Ariya Opera Company and played the role of ‘Spirit’ in Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas,”

Gwen released her debut album, “Water Gazing,” in 2002, a blend of original compositions and jazz standards. Her second album, ‘Conversions” (2014), features collaborations with pianist Jobic Le Masson.

Over the years, Gwen has had the privilege of performing with renowned musicians such as John Betsch, Peter Giron, Bobby Few, Jobic Le Masson, Harry Swift, John Stevens, Dudu Pukwana, Bheki Mseleku, and Aldridge Hansberry. She has also worked with choreographers Elsa Wolliaston and Mehdi Farajpour.

In addition to her musical career, Gwen alos writes poetry. Her first collection, “Flowers for My Hair” will be released soon.

Harry Swift

Born in England, Harry Swift discovered the music of Charles Mingus when he was 15, sparking a lifelong musical passion.

Initially a self-taught musician after relocating to Paris in 1980, he enhanced his musical abilities under the guidance of renowned double bass bassists and instructors Jacques Cazauran and François Rabbath.

throughout his crereer, Harry Swift engaged in diverse and innovative collaborations with distinguished artists including Bobby Few, Steve Lacy, Kirk Lightsey, Mal Waldron, Bill Hardman, Sunny Murray, Joe Lee Wilson, Alain Jean-Marie, Noah Howard, Jalal Nuriddin, Ricky Ford, Benny Golson...

Starting in 1995, he performed as part of a trio alongside Jon Handelsman (saxophones) and Jean-Claude Montredon (drums).

Additionally, he dedicated more than fifteen years to playing Brazilian choro alongside pianist Maria-Inês Guimaraes and various Brazilian musicians.

Harry Swift also a composer and arranges; his original pieces are frequently performed by groups in which he plays between 1984 and 2021, he served as the double bassist and artistic partner of pianist Bobby Few, accompanying him in various configurations: from duo to septet and primarily in trio with drummer Ichiro Onoe.

His ongoing projects include a duo with vocalist Gwen Sampé exploring Billy Strayhorn's repertoire and a quartet featuring Jon Handelsman, Jobic Le Masson, and Ichiro Onoe.
