Un itinéraire exceptionnel au coeur de la crise politique thaïlandaise
C’est en 2012, à Bangkok, que j’ai fait la connaissance de Aum Neko, alors jeune étudiante transgenre de 18 ans qui se lançait dans l’activisme LGBT.
Sa fougue adolescente et volontiers provocatrice, sur des sujets d’abord légers comme la question du port de l’uniforme à l'université, avait fait parler d’elle sur les réseaux sociaux en Thaïlande. A l’origine de son combat, une question : comment faire ma place dans la société quand celle-ci rejette mon identité ?
J’ai alors été le témoin de sa médiatisation rapide. Tandis que la situation en Thaïlande se crispait progressivement, ses actions prenaient un tour de plus en plus politique. Icône étudiante de la défense de la démocratie, elle est devenue la cible des forces réactionnaires qui cherchaient à renverser le gouvernement élu. Accusée de crime de lèse-majesté, menacée par les mouvements ultra-royalistes, elle est traquée par l’armée quand les généraux prennent le pouvoir, le 22 mai 2014 (sur le contexte politique du film, voir la FAQ ci-dessous). Le film s’est alors poursuivi dans des conditions difficiles mais qui ont contribué à accroître l’intimité avec le personnage. En épousant le destin de Aum jusqu’à sa fuite hors de Thaïlande, ce film en cours devenait pour elle un refuge. Elle a finalement obtenu l'asile politique en France en 2015 où elle travaille et étudie aujourd'hui.
An extraordinary journey steeped into the Thai political crisis
I met Aum Neko in 2012 in Bangkok, when she was a young transgender student of 18 years old freshly launched into LGBT activism.
Her teenage ardour, coupled with a heavy dose of provocation, had made her famous on the Thai social media scene, where she started with discussing light subjects, such as the issue of the obligation to wear a uniform in Thai Universities. One question was at the centre of her fight - how can I find my place in society when this society negates my identity?
I then became a witness of her fast rising to fame in the Thai media.
While the political situation in Thailand grew more tense everyday, her activism took on a more political turn. As an icon of students fighting for democracy, she became the target of the conservative powers who were trying to overthrow the elected government. She was accused of lese-majeste, threatened by the ultra-royalists, and when the army seized power on the 22nd of May 2014, the military junta started tracking her down. From then on, making this movie became much more complicated, but the difficult circumstances only served to increase the degree of proximity I felt with my character. Bearing witness to her journey, from going into hiding to fleeing Thailand in exile, this movie turned into a sanctuary that allowed Aum to seek refuge in France as a political refugee in 2015. She now lives, works and studies there.
Pourquoi avons nous besoin de vous pour soutenir ce projet ?
Tout en traitant des questionnements intimes sur l’identité, ce film est fortement engagé dans le combat pour la démocratie en Thaïlande et pour des valeurs que je crois universelles. Il milite pour la liberté, l’égalité et la tolérance qui furent bafouées par l’aristocratie et la junte militaire lors du coup d’état de mai 2014. J’ai éprouvé un profond sentiment de révolte face à la façon dont l’armée a confisqué le pouvoir des mains du peuple thaï, mais cela n’a que raffermi ma volonté de finir ce projet coûte que coûte. Notre film est devenu une affaire clandestine, sur laquelle mes collaborateurs thaïlandais ont dû travailler dans l’anonymat et en secret, compte tenu des risques pour leur sécurité personnelle et professionnelle. Cette situation a entraîné des retards, des surcoûts, et des difficultés de financement. Le tournage et le montage sont désormais terminés, mais nous devons encore effectuer un gros travail de post production, tant au niveau de l’image que du son, et nous avons besoin de vous pour faire exister ce projet.
Why do we need you to support this project?
While engaging into a reflexion on the intimate matters of identity, this movie is also firmly grounded into the fight for democracy taking place in Thailand and stands for all the values that I trust to be universal. It stands up for liberty, equality and tolerance, values that have all been trampled upon by both the aristocracy and the junta. When the coup happened, I felt both disgusted by the way power was being confiscated away from the hands of the Thai people. I determined to finish that movie at all costs. We pursued our work in clandestinity, with most of our Thai team having to work in secret, sometimes at the peril of their own personal and professional safety. This particular situation induced delays, over costs and financing issues. The shooting and editing are now completed, but we still have a copious amount of work left to do in post production, which is why we need to you to support us in the final and decisive steps of our project.

Le film explore les relations complexes entre l’itinéraire exceptionnel de Aum Neko, la crise historique majeure que traverse la Thaïlande depuis plusieurs années, et les représentations mentales de la société thaïe. Il m'a donc semblé important de trouver une forme filmique spécifique, qui fasse dialoguer différents types d'images. Certaines montrent des moments intimes, au plus près de Aum dans son quotidien et dans ses actions politiques. D’autres sont des images plus journalistiques, parfois violentes, qui rendent compte de la chute de la démocratie en Thaïlande. Enfin, des scènes de danse fantasmagoriques, empruntées à l'imagerie des cabarets de "ladyboys" thaïlandais, surgissent comme le coryphée d’une tragédie moderne en train de s’écrire.
A film on the cusp of genres
The movie delves into the complex relationship between Aum Neko’s own personal destiny and that of the major historical crisis that has been shaking Thailand over the past few years, along with the mental representations of the Thai society. It thus seemed to me all the more crucial to find the precise film genre that would be able to articulate these heterogeneous images together. Some of them show intimate moments of Aum’s life inside, at home, and others show her outside, embarked on political missions. Others yet are images from the news, sometimes violent ones, tracing the downfall of democracy in Thailand. Lastly, some are dance scenes borrowing from the imagery of Thai “ladyboys” cabaret. There is an eerie and phantasmagorical quality to them, as they seemingly emerge like the coryphee of a modern tragedy being written under our eyes.
La musique dans le film
La musique est signée Wilfried Paris, avec qui j’avais déjà travaillé comme arrangeur sur l’une de ses chansons. Nous avions une sensibilité commune, y compris le goût de la musique thaïlandaise “molam” des années 60, sur laquelle il avait lui même écrit en tant que journaliste. Ses deux derniers albums questionnent les idées de dualité, d'ambivalence, de porosité entre monde intérieur (imaginaire, rêve) et monde extérieur (société, autrui), et utilisent des formes musicales susceptibles de provoquer des sensations hypnotiques, apaisantes, matricielles. Son dernier album s'intitule d'ailleurs "Matrice". La musique des Rêves Siamois n’est donc pas une illustration sonore ou un accompagnement, mais joue un rôle essentiel dans la narration et participe à l'écriture du film lui-même.
Music in the movie
The music was composed by Wilfried Paris. I had worked with him before as an arranger on one of his songs. We have a common sensibility, such as a taste for ‘molam’, or Thai folk music from the 60’s and on which Wilfried has written articles as a journalist. Both his last albums deal with notions of dualism, ambivalence, porosity between the outside and inner worlds (society and the others VS imagination and dreams). They both resort to musical shapes that are susceptible to arouse a feeling of a hypnotic and peaceful, almost womb-like quality. His last album is indeed called ‘Matrice.’ Hence, the music on the movie Siamese Dreams is not so much an illustration in sound as it is a pivotal element of the narration itself, playing a fundamental role in the genesis of the film."
Comment allons nous utiliser l’argent de la collecte ?
Le montage image actuel du film est quasiment définitif mais je souhaite encore effectuer un gros travail de post production, tant au niveau de l’image que du son et j'ai choisi de faire une collecte sur ce projet pour pouvoir le terminer.
Pour l'étalonnage, je ne veux pas gommer le caractère hétéroclite des différents types d’images, mais je souhaite jouer sur des "textures" adaptées au statut des images pour incarner visuellement différents niveaux de lecture qui vont progressivement s'entremêler (images « télévisuelles »pour les événements politiques / images documentaires pour l’itinéraire de Aum Neko / images plus sophistiquées pour les scènes de danse).
Le son des scènes "documentaires" est essentiellement du son direct qui nécessite un gros travail de montage son et de mixage pour modeler les ambiances, créer l'environnement sonore des scènes. Le son est toujours intradiégétique et la source des voix off est le plus souvent identifiée dans le champ. Seule exception, le morceau de fin du film qui accompagne Aum Neko dans sa traversée de la dernière cloison, la frontière, pour rejoindre le monde extérieur. En ce qui concerne les ambiances, Bangkok est une ville bruyante, encombrée, dont le son, à l’image des sifflets des “whistleblowers”, sera de plus en plus étouffant à mesure que Aum s’y trouvera piégée. Le bruit s’immisce dans les intérieurs. Il est ainsi important de montrer la porosité entre intérieur et extérieur, y compris pendant certaines scènes de clandestinité, où les bruits de la ville peuvent rompre le silence, puisque Aum a d’abord dû se cacher en plein coeur de Bangkok. Cet environnement sonore contribuera ainsi à mieux dessiner l’espace de la fuite. Enfin, je souhaite également refaire les voix off afin de diriger plus finement Aum dans le ton et la diction.
How are we going to use the money from the fundraising ?
The current editing is almost definite but the biggest part of post production work, including both images and sound, remains to be done, which is why I need funds to bring this project to life.
As to the colour grading, I do not want to erase the heterogeneous aspect of the different images, but I do wish to play upon the textures so as to find the one that will best fit each image in its particular status, as they are very diverse - TV news report style for coverage of political events, documentary film for Aum Neko’s journey, sophisticated shots for the dance scenes. In doing so, the different levels of reading will be incarnated visually in the different types of images.
The sound on the documentary scenes is mostly direct and necessitates a heavy work of editing and mixing so as to model the atmospheres and create the right sound environment for each scene.
The sound is always intradiegetic and the sources of the voiceover are most often identified on screen. The only exception is the closing track that accompanies Aum as she pushes through the last border that she needs to cross before being released into the outside world. As regards the atmosphere, Bangkok being a crowded and noisy city, the sound there will get more stifling as Aum gets more deeply ensnared in its political tangles, on the model of the shrill sounds of the whistles blown by the conservative activists. The noise seeps into the houses and it is important to show how porous the line is between inside and outside worlds, all the more so during clandestinity scenes since Aum was forced to go into hiding amidst the very heart of the city’s chaos and danger, and where the sounds of the city find a way to intrude upon the silence of her hiding place. All these sound effects will help to outline the space of her journey from hiding to fleeing, and to echo the menace of the outside world of society violating her right to make private choices regarding her life and identity.
Finally, I also wish to redo the voiceover so as to direct Aum into a more subtle and precise tone and diction.

Les événements politiques, toile de fond du film, révèlent les tensions profondes qui divisent la société thaïlandaise. D'un côté une élite aristocratique défendant les valeurs paternalistes de tradition, de hiérarchie, et qui cherche à maintenir ses anciens privilèges en brandissant la figure du Roi (elle s’appuie sur la mouvance des chemises jaunes). De l’autre côté les classes populaires qui acquièrent une conscience politique et défendent les valeurs démocratiques (les chemises rouges qui soutenaient le gouvernement dirigé pour la première fois par une femme, Yingluck Shinawatra). Deux projets de société, deux visions, qui se heurtent avec violence, contredisant l’image idyllique d’une société harmonieuse, paisible et unie où chacun aurait sa place sous l’autorité bienveillante du Roi. Ces événements font d’abord irruption dans l’itinéraire de Aum Neko, tout en étant mis à distance par un traitement télévisuel ; puis ils vont progressivement s’y mêler à mesure que Aum Neko prend place dans le débat politique et devient à son tour un personnage médiatique.
The movie’s background is the political events that shook Thailand in the past few years and revealed the depth of its social tensions. On the one side stand the aristocrats who wish to maintain their privileges and rely on the paternalistic values of tradition and hierarchy, making heavy use of the figure of the King. They are linked to the Yellow Shirts movement. On the other hand, the lower classes who are just gaining political awareness stand for the values of democracy, supporting the Red Shirts movement and its prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra - the first woman to ever hold this position in the history of Thailand. These two sides illustrates two visions of society colliding with much violence, thus contradicting the idyllic picture of a harmonious and united Thai society where everyone would live peacefully under the benevolent authority of the King. These events first irrupt into Aum’s personal life, while being kept at a distance through a TV-news-image treatment, but then they progressively mingle in her life as she takes her stance in the ongoing political debate and becomes an actor of the TV news herself.
Le film est séquencé par des scènes de danse, situées dans un intérieur qui est à mes yeux celui de la société thaïe où est née Aum Neko, une société qui la constitue autant qu’elle l’étouffe, et dont le destin l'amènera à s'extraire. Ces scènes sont inspirées par les cabarets de "ladyboys" dont Aum Neko explique qu’ils enferment les personnes transgenres sous prétexte d'en célébrer la beauté. Le cabaret est un lieu fermé, non localisé, c’est un ailleurs en intérieur ; une bulle, qui intervient comme une respiration, et qui agit comme une caisse de résonnance. Il incarne le rêve traditionnel des katoeys (personnes transgenres en Thaïlande) de se réaliser pleinement en femmes sous les projecteurs, mais c’est aussi un rêve enfermé dans un intérieur irréel, dans lequel l’affirmation de soi passe par et pour un artifice. A l'inverse, Aum Neko agit dans la cité et en traverse toutes les cloisons jusqu'à devoir fuir son propre pays. Les danseuses sont filmées dans une installation ronde ceinte d’un voile transparent, un écrin de lumière qui agit comme un écran sur lequel se projettent des images et des ombres. Ce cabaret imaginaire et fantasmatique entre en résonance avec Aum Neko, lui répondant à la manière d’un coryphée, faisant écho à son destin par la reprise de motifs et de thèmes : la première danse est une mise en scène d’un mythe originel thaïlandais d’inspiration hindouiste mettant en scène un personnage androgyne ; la seconde développe le thème de l'enfermement, un enfermement doux et presque foetal ; la troisième celui de l'affirmation de l'identité transgenre ; et la dernière évoque la fuite et l’exil. A travers ces scènes de danse, le destin en quatre actes de Aum se reflète dans le miroir de la société thaïe.
This movie is sequenced by four dance scenes located in what represents, to my eyes, the ‘inside(s)’ of Thai society. It is the same society that defines Aum and bore her into the world but also constricts and stifles her, and that it will be her destiny to flee. These scenes are inspired by the ‘ladyboys’ cabarets that, according to Aum, confine transgender people to precise roles and identities while pretending to celebrate their beauty. The cabaret itself is an enclosed space whose location remains unnamed, it is an elsewhere situated indoors, a bubble that stands for a pause and breathing space and acts like a soundbox. It metaphorizes the traditional dream of katoeys (Thai transgender people) of fulfilling themselves by becoming ‘true’ women under the spotlights, while at the same time turning it into a dream confined within the boundaries of an unreal and enclosed space, in which one’s quest for identity must both resort to an artefact and be exposed as one. On the contrary, Aum is active within the city and as she successively breaks all its partitions and boundaries, she is ultimately left with no choice but to leave her own country.
The dancers are filmed in a circular installation that is surrounded by a sheer veil hanging from above. This luminous setting encases them and acts like a screen on which different images and shadows are projected. This imaginary and phantasmatic cabaret echoes Aum Neko’s thoughts and journey, it punctuates her story, dialogues with her like a coryphee and reflects her destiny by taking up its themes and motifs. The first dance accordingly tells the story of how, in a traditional Thai myth of Hindu inspiration, male, female and ‘khatoey’ were created and brought into the world. The second scene expands upon the theme of confinement but in a soft and almost womb-like atmosphere. The third scene is that of transgender affirmation and the last one evokes an escape and exile. Through these four dance scenes, Aum Neko’s destiny in four acts is reflected in the mirror of Thai society.
Pendant les 4 années passionnantes que j'ai vécues en Thaïlande, le phénomène très ancien des khatoeys (les personnes transgenres thaïlandaises) m’a particulièrement intéressé, car il me semble être une porte d’entrée révélatrice de l’identité culturelle de ce pays. Je l’avais déjà abordé auparavant à travers le monde du spectacle, en travaillant avec un cabaret de “ladyboys” pour la réalisation d’une captation et d’un teaser. Suite à cette première approche qui m’avait permis de m'insérer dans le milieu des ladyboys, j’ai cherché à suivre l’itinéraire d’une personne affirmant son identité transgenre. J’ai voulu comprendre les enjeux d’un tel cheminement dans une dimension très personnelle, mais aussi dans sa manière de s’insérer dans une société thaïlandaise elle-même en proie à une crise politique qui est aussi identitaire. Ma rencontre avec Aum Neko m’a fait l’effet d’une révélation. Elle est de ces personnes dont le positionnement, la parole et l’action sont de nature à faire tomber les voiles et les masques, à faire apparaître l’envers du décor dans ses contradictions, et à mettre à nu les logiques qui articulent blocages sociétaux, hiérarchies sociales, emprise culturelle et domination politique. J’ai compris que bien souvent, l’itinéraire d’affirmation identitaire des personnes transgenres, loin d’être celui d’une libération personnelle, était en réalité un confinement dans des rôles et des images précisément délimités par une société très hiérarchisée. A l’inverse, le combat personnel d’Aum Neko renverse les normes et les codes établis, déchire les uniformes et traverse les cloisons avec fracas, ce qui lui a valu une ascension médiatique très rapide. Son activisme a pris alors un tour plus politique, se heurtant aux forces réactionnaires qui vont prendre le pouvoir par un coup d’état militaire ; un engagement pacifique pour les droits de l’Homme, le féminisme, la tolérance, contre l’instrumentalisation des traditions, le culte du secret et la sacralisation du pouvoir.
During the four intense years that I spent in Thailand, I was particularly interested by the khatoeys phenomenon in that it seems to me to be a particularly relevant and original entryway into the cultural identity of the country. I had already crossed paths with it through the world of show business when working on the videorecording and making of a teaser for a ‘ladyboys’ cabaret show. Following this first encounter and having gained a few contacts in the ladyboys milieu, I started looking for a transgender person whose journey towards identity affirmation I could follow. I wanted to understand the impact such a journey can have on a personal life, but also how it would fit into a Thai society that is itself struggling with a crisis as identitarian as it is political. Meeting Aum Neko was like a revelation. She is one of those rare people who, by unimaginable courage in voice, actions and political stance, can tear off masks and rip veils, bring to light the contradictions hiding behind the scenes and lay bare the logics articulating together the sociological gridlocks, social hierarchies, cultural domination and political tyranny. I came to understand that most of the time, the journey towards personal affirmation of a transgender person’s identity involves far less of a personal liberation than a confinement within roles that have been defined for them by society in a very strict and hierarchized way. On the contrary, Aum Neko’s personal fight topples social norms and codes, rips uniforms and crashes through partitions with such noise that it was only a matter of time before she attracted the attention of both the media and the authorities. When that happened, she turned to political activism and entered in a fight against the conservative forces that eventually seized the power through a coup. Hers is a pacifist battle that fights for human rights, feminism and tolerance, and denounces the instrumentalization of traditions, the cult of secrecy and the sacralization of power.
