Autoportrait filmique d'une Endowarrior

Je filme mon quotidien avec l'endométriose entre mai 2022 et septembre 2023. Comment filme-t-on son autoportrait en étant avant tout une femme en situation de handicap et malade ? J'ai choisi un dispositif simple, une caméra, un trépied, des plans fixes. On pourrait croire à certains moments qu'il y a comme une caméra cachée qui joue à voler des moments intimes au personnage. Je ne sais plus si je dirige la caméra ou si je la pose pour l'oublier. Parfois, j'interagis avec la caméra car je sais qu'elle est là et je laisse un air brechtien planer sur le film.

Ce film est à la croisée de la performance, du documentaire et de l'expérimentation. Toute la complexité est maintenant à l'étape de post-production : faire des choix esthétiques, directionnels, couper les scènes et les assembler pour former une narration à la fois chronologique mais aussi esthétique. Pour monter le film, je vais faire appel à une assistante-monteuse ou co-monteuse. Je vais faire régulièrement le point avec mon consultant, Samuel Gagnon. L'idée est d'avoir un point de vue féminin pour m'accompagner dans le montage, pour avoir une sensation que le corps n'est pas sexualisé ni esthétisé, qu'il est brut, et qu'il est beau parce qu'il est authentique et qu'on le voit souffrir (le voit-on vraiment avec une maladie invisible?)

Je suis heureuse de réaliser moi-même ce documentaire sur mon quotidien avec la maladie car je me retrouve dans la position de personne concernée qui fait le film, et cela me plait. Il n'y a pas d'ascendant de l'image sur le sujet qu'elle représente. Je suis au même niveau que le film, en tant que réalisatrice et objet. L'un ne surplombe pas l'autre. C'est tout l'enjeu de ce travail de post-production. Je veux aussi démontrer que l'on peut être en situation de handicap tout en dirigeant un projet cinématographique d'ampleur.

Est-ce que l'on apprend quelque chose sur cette mystérieuse maladie en observant le quotidien de cette trentenaire ? Oui et non, car ce n'est pas un reportage didactique sur l'endométriose, maladie complexe, incurable et protéiforme qui est différente chez chaque patiente atteinte et handicape parfois très peu les patientes, d'autres fois très sévèrement.

I am filming my everyday life with my endometriosis between May 2022 and September 2023. How does someone film her self-portrait being a disabled and sick woman ? I chose a simple device, a camera, a tripod, and still shots. We could think at certain moments that there is la hidden camera which is playing at stealing intimate moments to the character. I don't know anymore if I am directing the camera or if I put it out there to forget it. Sometimes I interact with it because I know it is there and I am allowing a Brechtian style hovering on the film.

This film is at an intersection of performance art, documentary, and experimentation. The complexity of it is now at the stage of the post-production: to make aesthetic choices, directional decisions, cutting the scenes and assembling them to form a narration both chronological and aesthetic. I will edit the film with help from an editing assistant (or a co-editor). I will regularly take stock with my consultant Samuel Gagnon. The idea is to have a feminine point of view to accompany me in the editing process. It is also important to have a sensation that the body is not sexualized nor aesthetized, but that it is raw, and beautiful because of being authentic and that we can see it suffering. (Do we really see it suffering knowing that it suffers from an invisible disease?)

I am glad to direct myself this documentary about my daily with endometriosis because I am in the position of being at the same time the concerned person and the person making the film. I am at the same level of the film, as a film director and as the subject. One does not overhang the other. It is the all stake of this post-production's work. I also want to demonstrate that we can be with a disability and still direct a major cinematographic project.

Do we learn anything about this mysterious disease by observing the daily life of this thirty-something? Yes and no, because it is not a didactic reporting about endometriosis, a complex and incurable illness, protean and divergent between each patient. Sometimes the women are being very disabled and sometimes only subtly disabled...
