[ English ]
Violin Soliloquy is my first solo disc, and I am overjoyed to soon be able to share it with you! It is slated for release by Paladino Media as a physical copy and on all major streaming platforms this coming September. I'm especially grateful to Paladino for their support as I have already had the pleasure of recording for one of their sub-labels, Kairos, as part of the Ukho Ensemble Kyiv. I am also indebted to Studio des Momidjis for giving me free reign over their studios for the recording, and to the living composers on this disc who agreed to entrust me with the recording of their music: Wolfgang Rihm, Matthias Pintscher, and Orlando Bass.
Inspiration and themes
The subject of duality in artistic expression is one I have always been drawn to, and this is featured in my program choices for Violin Soliloquy. With this disc, I aim to showcase the solo violin's natural propensity for duality in expression. You will hear both the melodic and polyphonic capabilities of the instrument, its lyrical and yet virtuosic natures, and how each composer plays with this in their own way. More importantly, you will hear a solo violin, yet one that also falls into musical dialogue with itself - sometimes solitary and reflective, sometimes bursting into the energy of multiple voices despite remaining a single instrument...
This is violin music hailing from across 100 years of writing, yet apart from giving it markers via dates, this is music that's arguably uncategorizable in style: each piece is its own language and has its own inner world. One could look at the dates of the composers and say it is 20th century, but that would be misleading by suggesting a stereotype...
Besides that, through this music you'll hear a violinist - that is, myself, offering what I hope is a journey of expressive musical discovery for you through works that you may have heard of before, alongside other gems less-often played - and one that is in fact a first commercial recording.

The Recording
I will be going into the studio on April 1st for three and a half days of recording, culminating in a streamed concert given live from the studio. Studio des Momidjis is a gorgeous hall designed by the architect and pianist Dominique du Merle, located deep in the French Normandy countryside.

A quoi sert l'argent collecté
Where is your support going?
I am incredibly fortunate to be able to work with the renowned engineer Christophe Germanique, who has specifically an immense experience working with violinists. Your generous support will go towards his fees for the recording studio time and mixing of the Master, as well as to the mechanical rights fees, which allows me to record the works on this disc that are still under copyright, as well as offer the first commercial recording of the Sonata by Orlando Bass.

Letter to the Listener
As a musician, I’ve asked myself over the years what a dream solo CD might sound like – what would be the 70 minutes of music that I feel I absolutely have to get out to your ears?
The one rule I made with myself is that it has to be music where I feel I have something truly unique to say to you with my specific way of playing. It also became important to me to include music you might have heard before, alongside works that have not yet had a commercial recording - new musical stories to discover!
And so after piecing this all together, it is with great excitement that I would like to take you on a listening journey through 100 years of solo violin music, spanning five generations of composers, all of whom have had a personal and musical impact on my own path as a performer. They hail from a variety of cultures and backgrounds, not unlike myself – my family emigrated to Israel from the ex-Soviet Union, and then eventually to the US, where I was born. My own musical journey took me from the heart of Midwestern America eastwards to New York, and eventually to Paris, France, where I am now based.
One of the things I find most wonderful about the world of music is that often it gives you the chance to travel, discover different musical practices and exchange with communities of people you may not otherwise have been so easily connected with. Luckily, the violin is a relatively light and easy travel companion, and you can take it out to play almost anywhere! This freedom of mobility is precious, not only in the sense of instrumental versatility, but as proof that each one of us as humans – musicians or not – have our own potential for individual, unaccompanied, personal expression. By choosing to have my debut CD feature entirely solo violin works, I hope to engage each of you in a musical experience that feels more one-on-one, and inspire you to hear the music in your own unique way.
I am incredibly grateful for your support for my first solo disc and cannot wait to share this music with you!
Musically,
Rachel
