***THE SHORT FILM PROJECT***

Shakti must make a choice between her illegitimate child and the reputable family she was raised in.
GENRE & THEME
SHAKTI - THE POWER OF LOVE is a short fictional dramedy observing the intergenerational dialogue between Rajasthani mothers, wives, and sisters in 1970s India. It delves into the themes of agency and identity to question (but not necessarily demean) tradition and its impact on contemporary India.
NARRATIVE PURPOSE
I imagine a world where families choose girls. The film portrays Shakti as a thoughtful and an emotionally intelligent character as opposed to how the patriarchal society (including her mother) perceives her i.e. a victim of her circumstances. I believe that the feminine energy of love, ferocity, and wisdom lies in each of us, and when discovered, it can transform our communities for the better.
Unlike many stories about battered rural Indian women, Shakti doesn't incite fear. Instead, the film presents Shakti as a role model of courage and determination, capable of listening to her own voice.
I find stories of Indian women - from the past and the present - thoroughly courageous because in every example, they triumph despite obstacles. Their stories inform my capabilities of overcoming challenges, be it those posed by context, circumstances, or people.
Being an underrepresented filmmaker is not easy; the filmmaking industry usually wants to tell our stories. And understanding that we are not made from the same mould, challenges are a given. So since I started this screenplay in 2021, I've had to ask myself - Why should anyone care about this protagonist and this film?
I feel that people would care for the same reasons as I do. Shakti breaks barriers. She looks at patriarchy in the eye and refuses to submit. She makes unwanted girl children feel wanted again. She fights for freedom. She feels hope. She symbolises the epitome of clarity and courage.
I'm hoping that you'd see the hard work put in to get this film to this stage, and would contribute to a narrative that celebrates the triumphs of women and girls.

NOTE OF INTENTION

Shakti – a short fictional dramedy – is about the protagonist Shakti who is a daring, unconventional, and inspiring woman in a 1970s Rajasthan in India. In the film, Shakti must make a choice between her illegitimate child of rape and the reputable family she was raised in.
Through the themes of agency and identity, the voices of my film’s characters reveal the paradox of motherhood. The intergenerational dialogue between Rajasthani mothers, wives, and sisters in the film shows us how difficult womanhood and motherhood can be in a patriarchal society. And when the protagonist exercises choice and enlightens herself through poetry, we discover a relatable truth about her womanness and humanity.
The film’s essential dramatic question is: Will Shakti choose and unite with her baby girl? The more rhetorical question posed is: how long before women and girls can liberate themselves? In this film, our audience enter the space between love and longing as they go on a journey with the protagonist and her comrade, a nurse, to witness their unconventionality.
Why choose a period short based in Rajasthan, you might ask. Simply because I believe that strong, rare women from the 70s can greatly inspire contemporary Indian women.
On many occasions, I have wondered about the evolution of feminism. Are we better off today than yesterday? Why have women struggled so much for equality? When the abortion law and sterilization were introduced in India in the 1970s, women were supposedly to become the architects of their family planning.
Why, then, are we missing 63 million female births? Why are educated families still indulging in gender preference today? The past is more embedded in our contemporary lives than we think. This film now questions that past then, so as to understand our present-day.
Evolution takes time, and I see this film as a part of it. I want those Indian girls to be born. I want women to be proud of Shakti for speaking up and choosing her daughter. I want women and girls to feel wanted and to think.

I was born in West India and as an adult, I journeyed on my motorbike to observe rural families across Rajasthan. One thing was clear – these women and girls are truly extraordinary despite their everyday challenges. From fighting with brothers to learn riding bicycles and saying no to arranged child marriages to voicing against patriachal grandmothers in joint families and taking the unconventional decision to educate girls fully before even thinking about marriage.
These Rajasthani women and girls are true warriors. So, this film is also very personal and heartfelt. It observes Rajasthani women – mothers from different generations – push limits for the sake of their children, and reveals their flawed, vulnerable personalities in favour of compassion.
And I can truly see Rajasthani girls feeling seen when they watch Shakti. And that’s because I’m one of them and I’m in awe of my character. So are my leading, established actresses, Sandhya Mridul and Natasha Rastogi. They are Rajasthani women who play the protagonist and the nurse in the film.

For this story, choosing rape as context but not content has been really challenging, yet purposeful. As content, rape is juicy, but as context, it’s contemplative and what’s left unsaid. I deeply felt it is the only way to focus on the women in this film and to show the positive impact of personal insight, support, and artistic expression in the choices they make. That’s what Shakti is truly about.
As my team and I enter into the production phase, I hope that we are able to balance humility with liberty and acceptance with making daring choices. Shakti will be filmed in Delhi in August. We foresee its projections not only in film festivals but also across India, to let girls access a new way of thinking. We hope that this film will encourage others to transform helplessness into courage and to believe in the possibility of a world beyond patriarchy.
I thank you for your understanding of this film’s vision, and we hope to receive your support in making this film.
Sincerely,
Jahnvi Pananchikal

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Shakti – the Power of Love is a short film written over a period of two years, but thought about for over a lifetime. It tells the story of a protagonist who wants the impossible i.e. to accept and raise her girl born out of rape. That too in the 1970s. That’s a big deal.

I started writing alone, imagining a world where woman have the agency to decide what’s good for them. I have seen Shakti’s story in every article, encounter, epic tale and modern story. But many of those representations disappoint me, as an artist, a woman and a human being, because women like Shakti are not victims to me.

For me, Shakti is an inspiring hero. She is flawed yet whole, furious yet gentle, helpless yet courageous, silent yet loud. The film will be shot from her point of view for the most part. Additionally, the camera will largely only focus on one character at a time. The paradox of Shakti’s personality will be demonstrated in pacing – the first half with longer takes, close-ups, and stillness, and the second half in quick, crisp takes, medium and long contextual shots with multiple characters, and movement. This is how the story will build intensity.

The context is a traditional family house and the maternity ward of a hospital. Lighting will show contrast in Shakti’s feeling of entrapment and the hope of seeing girls shine. The window, for example, symbolises possibilities. The daylight then would be clearly visible outside while being lightly reflected on the floor, showing the ephemeral presence of the curtains. The camera will absorb the impact of light on textures and movements of the protagonist when she writes, moves, walks, talks, and sees.

More than the external atmosphere, it’s the interior decoration, costume & make-up, and production design that will clearly indicate the time period and context. For example, the kitchen and its utensils in the house and the type of armoire in the living room. Add to that, the paintings on the wall, or the type of traditional saree or salwar-kameez worn by the characters. The sterilization campaign will be demonstrated at the hospital reception through extras dressed in turbans and bare-feet, murmuring in the local language.

Sandhya Mridul will play Shakti in this film. Being a Rajasthani woman, her personal awareness of the struggles experienced by Indian women would do justice to the role. Alongside, Natasha Rastogi is also a Rajasthani woman who grew up in the 1970s. Her knowledge and experience would captivatingly illustrate the challenges faced by the nurse as an institutional employee and a human being. The two characters will be filmed in a very intimate manner, with the focus on the reactions, gaze, silences, and grace in their bodies. The healthy age gap between the actors will help show the nuances of generational differences that fuel the film’s themes of agency and identity.

The period film will be purposefully shown in technicolour, where the bright colours are juxtaposed and superimposed with the grey in the same image. It also serves to show a parallel between the past and the present to demonstrate time’s inter-relationality.

The film’s music is in the silence of movements, breathing, wind, door knocks, footsteps, sounds of dogs, opening of windows and doors and so on. Then there’s the music of the poem recitations that will have its own melody. Moments of conflict and triumphs will be accompanied by an interpretation of Kabir’s couplets with traditional instruments as in Banjara by Maati Baani.

Finally, the darkness of the beginning will be outweighed by the light at the end through transitions: from stillness to fluidity, close-ups to large shots, silence on the inside to vibrant sounds of the outside, the camera observing Shakti to then following her, gradually letting the audience feel, see, and understand her.

ENGLISH

We already have support of vAct in Vancouver for the distribution of this film. This endorsement is an absolute honor since it guarantees our first audience of this film at such early stages.

Moreover, we still have the encouragement of those who participated in the first campaign, which at the time had not gone through. Today, we are fortunate to be accompanied by many who believe in this film and we are ready to help take this campaign to its finish line.

Our first step is essential, at 5,000€, we can assure a fair remuneration only for our actors, all very talented.

The second level is fixed at 7,000€, which would allow us to bring on board the desired technical team, guaranteeing them a minimum remuneration for this important work.

In reaching 10,000€, we will be able to film with an ARRI Alexa camera, known to be one of the best in the market, perfectly adapted for our project that takes place in a historical context.

At 12,000€, we can design the costumes necessary in direct collaboration with our head of costumes.

At 15, 000€, we can finance a film set pivotal for the “mise en scene” of the hospital, an essential element of our film.

At 18,000€, I can hire a first AD and bring them to India, to ensure a smooth process of filming in this specific manner.

The goal of 20,000€ will guarantee the film’s  post-production in the most serene and professional conditions.

Finally, at 25,000€, I will convey my immense gratitude and assure you that your contribution gives the possibility of creating this film in exceptional conditions with some of the most talented people in the film community. This project is a gift that I wish to offer in return, as a testimonial of my gratefulness.
