REBIRTH: A MONUMENT TO THE LIVING – A TOTALLY UNPRECEDENTED INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVE / RENACIMIENTO: UN MONUMENTO A LOS VIVOS – UNA INICIATIVA INTERNACIONAL TOTALMENTE SIN PRECEDENTES

To help break the long-standing silence surrounding spiritual and sexual abuse within the Church, particularly against nuns worldwide, and to support the healing of victims of such abuse across the globe, we invite you to join the creation of Rebirth — a monumental, collective 50-square-meter mosaic centered on the theme of healing.

Created and signed by hermit mosaic artist Sister Samuelle, and collectively crafted with other nuns and former nuns who have survived spiritual and sexual abuse, Rebirth is a monumental mosaic measuring 4 meters in height by 12.5 meters in length — a bearer of collective memory and hope.

Para ayudar a romper el largo silencio que rodea los abusos espirituales y sexuales en el seno de la Iglesia, en particular contra religiosas de todo el mundo, y para apoyar la sanación de las víctimas de estos abusos a nivel global, te invitamos a unirte a la creación de Renacimiento — un mosaico monumental y colectivo de 50 metros cuadrados centrado en el tema de la reparación.

Creado y firmado por la artista ermitaña especializada en mosaicos, sor Samuelle, y elaborado colectivamente con otras religiosas y exreligiosas sobrevivientes de abusos espirituales y sexuales, Renacimiento es un mosaico monumental de 4 metros de altura por 12,5 metros de longitud — portador de memoria colectiva y esperanza.

Built as a composition of fragments assembled into a whole, symbolizing the process of repair, Rebirth will first be exhibited in its entirety in France. Afterwards, each fragment will be sent to one of 200 selected sacred locations around the world.

Construida como una composición de fragmentos ensamblados en un todo, simbolizando el proceso de reparación, Renacimiento se expondrá primero en su totalidad en Francia. Posteriormente, cada fragmento será enviado a uno de los 200 lugares sagrados seleccionados en todo el mundo.

Each piece will include a QR code, allowing anyone who scans it to instantly access the complete mosaic on their phone, view the map of the 200 sacred sites hosting fragments, and explore exclusive content: interviews, the film trailer, symphony excerpts, and more.

Each of these fragments — carrying memory, a cry, and a hope — will be permanently displayed in a sacred location somewhere around the world.

The 200 exhibition sites will be primarily selected from among those currently displaying the works of famed mosaicist priest Marko Rupnik — a known abuser of several nuns and ex-nuns who have now come forward and filed official complaints, seeking justice and recognition.

The goal: to offer a counter-narrative — a liberated voice transfigured through art, inhabiting the very same walls that once held silence and control. These thick walls of taboo, secrecy, and shame now need to switch sides.

A first in art history!

Cada pieza incluirá un código QR que permitirá a cualquiera que lo escanee acceder instantáneamente al mosaico completo en su teléfono, visualizar el mapa de los 200 sitios sagrados que albergan los fragmentos y descubrir contenidos exclusivos: entrevistas, el tráiler de la película, extractos de la sinfonía, entre otros.

Cada uno de estos fragmentos — portadores de memoria, de un grito y de una esperanza — se exhibirá de manera permanente en un lugar sagrado en algún punto del mundo.

Los 200 lugares de exposición serán seleccionados principalmente entre aquellos que actualmente exhiben las obras del célebre sacerdote y mosaiquista Marko Rupnik — conocido abusador de varias religiosas y exreligiosas que hoy han roto el silencio y han presentado denuncias oficiales en búsqueda de justicia y reconocimiento.

El objetivo: ofrecer una contranarrativa — una voz liberada y transfigurada a través del arte, habitando los mismos muros que alguna vez sostuvieron el silencio y el control. Estos muros gruesos de tabú, de secreto y de vergüenza deben ahora cambiar de lado.

After being a victim — silenced by fear, control, and shame.
After surviving — working to rebuild and piece together what was shattered.
It is time to be reborn.

Rebirth marks the moment where life opens again — where it becomes possible not just to live despite the wounds, but with them, and even through them.
It is a time to live fully.

For Christians, it also echoes the movement of the Resurrection — where the risen Christ is recognized by his loved ones through the very wounds that caused his death.

What is a tessera? / ¿Qué es una tesela?

A tessera (from the Latin tessera) is a small piece of material used in the creation of mosaics. Tesserae can be made of stone, glass, ceramic, marble, wood, slate, and more.

Sister Samuelle, in her contemporary artistic approach to mosaic art, engages in a true dialogue with the material, allowing it to express itself throughout her creative process. In doing so, she moves away from the geometric shapes of traditional tesserae and adapts to the structure of the material when cutting her pieces.

Una tesela (del latín tessera) es un pequeño fragmento de material utilizado en la creación de mosaicos. Las teselas pueden estar hechas de piedra, vidrio, cerámica, mármol, madera, pizarra, entre otros materiales.

Sor Samuelle, en su enfoque contemporáneo del arte del mosaico, entabla un verdadero diálogo con el material, permitiéndole expresarse durante todo su proceso creativo. Así, se aleja de las formas geométricas tradicionales de las teselas y adapta el corte de las piezas a la estructura misma del material.

Tesserae created exclusively for Rebirth / Teselas creadas exclusivamente para Renacimiento

After a long period of research, Sister Samuelle decided to create completely new tesserae, unlike anything seen before in art history, to compose the work Rebirth. Indeed, it is from a powder made of 95% natural materials (stone, marble, sand…) mixed with a binder (a process developed by Marius Aurentti) that the artist will form solid sheets of material, which will then be cut into a multitude of tesserae.

A color palette carefully chosen by the artist will guide the progression of the work: arid and cracked earth, representing the state of fragmentation experienced by victims of abuse, will gradually transform into unified earth, bathed in light and life. A state of rebirth to which these individuals aspire. Tesserae made of white marble, gold, and other light-colored stones will bring brightness and vitality to the entire mosaic.

Después de un largo periodo de investigación, sor Samuelle decidió crear teselas completamente nuevas, sin precedentes en la historia del arte, para componer la obra Renacimiento. De hecho, a partir de un polvo compuesto en un 95% de materiales naturales (piedra, mármol, arena, etc.) mezclado con un aglutinante (un proceso desarrollado por Marius Aurentti), la artista formará láminas sólidas de material, que luego serán cortadas en una multitud de teselas.

Una paleta de colores cuidadosamente elegida por la artista guiará la progresión de la obra: tierras áridas y agrietadas, representando el estado de fragmentación vivido por las víctimas de abusos, se transformarán progresivamente en tierras unificadas, bañadas de luz y de vida. Un estado de renacimiento al que aspiran estas personas. Teselas de mármol blanco, de oro y de otras piedras claras aportarán luminosidad y vitalidad a todo el mosaico.

A FILM AND MUSICAL CREATION TO SUPPORT REBIRTH AND FURTHER LIBERATE THE VOICES OF NUNS WORLDWIDE / A FILM AND MUSICAL CREATION TO SUPPORT RENACIMIENTO AND FURTHER LIBERATE THE VOICES OF NUNS WORLDWIDE

French filmmaker Quentin Delcourt, who initiated this commission from Sister Samuelle, will direct a feature-length documentary titled The Tesserae Symphony (90 minutes), intended for theatrical release.

The film will follow the entire creative journey — from the early conceptual stages through to the final placement of each tessera, and ultimately, the mosaic’s exhibition. It will also provide a platform for nuns and their allies from around the world to speak out about the spiritual and sexual abuse endured within religious congregations and the Catholic Church.

Filming is scheduled for 2025 and 2026, in France, Italy, Washington, Vietnam, South America, and other parts of the world.

An original symphony, composed by Baptiste Capitanio, will accompany the film and enrich this multidisciplinary project of artistic healing.

El cineasta francés Quentin Delcourt, quien inició este encargo de la hermana Samuelle, dirigirá un documental de larga duración titulado La Sinfonía de las Teselas (90 minutos), destinado a su estreno en cines.

El filme seguirá todo el proceso creativo, desde las etapas conceptuales iniciales hasta la colocación final de cada tesela, y, finalmente, la exhibición del mosaico. También proporcionará una plataforma para que monjas y sus aliados de todo el mundo hablen sobre el abuso espiritual y sexual sufrido dentro de las congregaciones religiosas y la Iglesia Católica.

La filmación está programada para 2025 y 2026 en Francia, Italia, Washington, Vietnam, América del Sur y otras partes del mundo.

Una sinfonía original, compuesta por Baptiste Capitanio, acompañará la película y enriquecerá este proyecto multidisciplinario de sanación artística.

Among the rewards offered through the campaign, you’ll have the option to fund the shipping of tesserae kits to other congregations worldwide. Thanks to your support, other nuns will also be able to contribute to this universal mosaic of healing and hope.
