Qui est la réalisatrice?

Martine Lancelot a exercé différents métiers du cinéma avant de devenir réalisatrice à la fin des années 70. Elle est tombée dans le cinéma grâce à sa mère Simone Lancelot, une des pionnières du cinéma Art et Essai à Paris. Elle a commencé par être photographe de plateau, puis de l’appareil photo elle est passée tout naturellement à la caméra, traçant son sillon singulier. À ce jour, elle a réalisé 25 films, des longs-métrages, des courts-métrages, mais surtout des documentaires de création ; hors des chemins balisés, poussée par le désir de partager, de dire le monde comme elle le voit.

Who is the director?

Martine Lancelot worked in various film professions before becoming a director at the end of the 70s. She fell into the cinema thanks to her mother Simone Lancelot, one of the pioneers of the Art et Essai cinema in Paris. She began by being a photographer, then from the camera she went naturally to the camera, tracing its singular path. To date, she has directed 25 films, feature films, short films, but above all creative documentaries; off the marked trails, driven by the desire to share, to tell the world as she sees it.

Quel est son projet de film?

"Je voudrais réaliser un film documentaire en hommage à la grande cinéaste belge Chantal Akerman (1950-2015).

Chantal Akerman est une des figures majeures du cinéma moderne, Elle a influencé et continue d'inspirer des réalisateurs comme Gus Van Sant, Todd Haynes, Apichatpong Weerasethakul et d'autres tous récompensés de la Palme d'Or au Festival de Cannes ou des Oscars. Chantal Akerman élabore, à partir de 1968, une œuvre unique dans la cinématographie et les arts vidéo dans le monde. Elle pratique aussi bien la fiction, l’essai, le documentaire que le cinéma expérimental ou l’installation vidéo. Ses films sont tour à tour burlesques et dramatiques, autobiographiques le plus souvent. Depuis sa mort, des rétrospectives de son oeuvre sont organisées dans les cinémathèques du monde entier.

Faire ce film c'est pour moi apporter ma vision de Chantal que j'ai eu la chance de connaître. Mon film reviendra sur nos rencontres dans les années 70-80. Une période d’expérimentation fondatrice de son œuvre. Le film est un flash-back à travers trois moments passés ensemble dont je me souviens et que je raconte dans une lettre adressée à Chantal. C’est un témoignage à deux voix sur le cinéma et la vie indissociables, sur des images de paysages désertiques allégoriques et des chambres vides semblables à celles présentes dans ses films.

Dans le trailer du film à venir on voit des images des paysages désertiques au Portugal, d'autres des appartements, chambre d'hôtels visités par Chantal Akerman et on y entend sa voix et la mienne dans un dialogue repris trente années après notre dernière rencontre".

What is her film project?

"I would like to make a documentary film in tribute to the great Belgian filmmaker ChantalAkerman (1950-2015). Chantal Akerman is one of the major figures of modern cinema, She has influenced and continues to inspire directors like Gus Van Sant, Todd Haynes, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and others all awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival or Oscars . Since 1968, Chantal Akerman has been producing a unique work in cinematography and video arts around the world. She practices fiction, essay, documentary as well as experimental cinema or video installation. His films are alternately burlesque and dramatic, autobiographical most often. Since his death, retrospectives of his work have been organized in cinematheques around the world.

Making this film is for me to bring my vision of Chantal that I had the chance to know. My film will come back to our meetings in the 70s and 80s. A period of foundational experimentation of his work. The film is a flashback through three moments together that I remember and that I tell in a letter to Chantal. It is a testimony to two voices on film and life inseparable, images of allegorical desert landscapes and empty rooms similar to those present in his films.

In the trailer of the upcoming film we see images of desert landscapes in Portugal, others apartments, room of hotels visited by Chantal Akerman and we hear her voice and mine in a dialogue taken over thirty years after our last meeting"

Quand son projet de film verra le jour?

- Le tournage débutera début 2020 dans des ruines industrielles au Portugal, et dans des intérieurs en France, chambres d’hôtels et appartements à Cannes et à Paris.
Le montage suivra le tournage et le film devrait être terminé au printemps 2020. Puis il sera diffusé en 2020, sur la chaîne Lyon Capitale TV, dans des festivals et à l'occasion de projections publiques associé à certains films de Chantal Akerman. Une édition DVD/SVOD est également prévue.

When will her film project come to light?

- Filming will begin in early 2020 in industrial ruins that I discovered in Portugal, and in interiors in France, hotel rooms and apartments in Cannes and Paris.
The editing will follow the shooting and the film should be finished in the spring of 2020. Then it will be broadcast in 2020, on the channel Lyon Capitale TV, in festivals and during public screenings associated with some films by Chantal Akerman. A DVD / SVOD edition is also planned.

Pourquoi ce film est important pour nous?

- Depuis plus de deux ans, Martine Lancelot travaille sur ce projet. Il lui a fallu remonter très loin dans sa mémoire pour revenir à ces moments qu'elle a passés avec Chantal Akerman et aux personnages importants du cinéma qui leur ont été proches. Pendant ces deux années, Martine Lancelot a eu l’impression de ne vivre que pour ce film, recherchant tous les détails de ses rencontres, les lieux, les personnes… et bien sûr, elle a revu les films de Chantal Akerman et lu ou relu ses livres. Alors, oui, ça lui tient tout particulièrement à cœur de faire découvrir ou redécouvrir la Chantal qu'elle a connue en « jeune fille de la fin des années 70 ». C'est donc avec émotion et le désir de témoigner d'une époque incroyable où tout ou presque était permis que Martine Lancelot s'apprête à réaliser ce film pas comme les autres.

Why is this film important to us?

- For more than two years, Martine Lancelot has been working on this project. She had to go back very far in her memory to return to those moments that she spent with Chantal Akerman and the important characters of the cinema that were close to them. During these two years, Martine Lancelot had the impression to live only for this film, looking for all the details of her encounters, places, people ... and of course, she reviewed the films of Chantal Akerman and read or reread his books. So, yes, it is particularly important to her to discover or rediscover the Chantal she knew as a girl of the late 70s. It is with emotion and the desire to witness an incredible time when almost everything was allowed that Martine Lancelot is preparing to make this film like no other.

Pourquoi avoir choisi une collecte?

À Leitmotiv Production, depuis une dizaine d'années nous avons produit la plupart des films de Martine Lancelot. Ce sont des films d'une auteure-réalisatrice exigeante et engagée dans l'humain et le cinéma et particulièrement à propos des femmes, leur place dans le cinéma, dans l'art et dans le monde.

Nous avons tenté de produire ce film dans le système cinématographique classique mais personne n'en a voulu! Trop singulier, trop personnel, trop radical, toutes sortes d'attributs qui constituent les qualités intrinsèques de notre projet. Nous avons alors décidé de ne pas baisser les bras et de le faire coûte que coûte avec nous l'espérons la générosité de quelques personnes avec lesquelles nous partagerons une passion commune pour l'oeuvre de Chantal Akerman. Ce film se veut une entrée particulière dans son univers unique.

Nous avons choisi de nous adresser aux personnes qui connaissent et apprécient l’œuvre de Chantal Akerman mais aussi à celles et ceux qui ont le désir de la connaître et de faire vivre sa mémoire en participant à cette collecte.

Why did you choose a collection?

At Leitmotiv Production, for the past ten years we have produced most of Martine Lancelot's films. They are films of a demanding author-director and engaged in the human and the cinema and especially about the women, their place in the cinema, in the art and in the world.

We tried to produce this film in the classic film system but no one wanted it! Too singular, too personal, too radical, all sorts of attributes that constitute the intrinsic qualities of our project. We then decided not to give up and to do it at all costs with the hope of the generosity of some people with whom we share a common passion for the work of Chantal Akerman. This film is a special entry into his unique universe.

We chose to address people who know and appreciate the work of Chantal Akerman but also to those who have the desire to know her and to make her memory alive by participating in this collection.
