Herbert. Un barbare dans le jardin

Zbigniew Herbert is one of the major humanist figures in the Europe of the 20th century.

In 1956, from the publication of his first collection “Collected Poems”, he became one of the most appreciated poets in Europe. His work, which draws on the heritage of ancient civilizations to highlight the links of a common European identity, has played a colossal role in the awakening of the mentalities of Eastern and Western Europe at that time separated by the Iron Curtain.

Translated in more than 40 languages, his poems, which have won many awards around the world, stand as hymns to freedom, human dignity and humanist values. Several times approached for the Nobel Prize, Herbert bequeathed us an immense, universal work  which even today remains a great inspiration for artists and writers around the world.

More than 20 years after the disappearance of the poet, HERBERT. A BARBARIAN IN THE GARDEN is the first feature-length documentary dedicated to Zbigniew Herbert.

This project, carried out in close collaboration with heirs and friends of the poet and the Zbigniew Herbert Foundation, is the result of years of work: a long research work, a shooting in 11 countries and more than 23 interviews.

We want the film to have an educational dimension for the today and tomorrow’s generations.
We want it to be a source of knowledge of Polish culture and more widely European culture, a source of memory.
So that everyone can remember the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to the search for the links of our common European indentity.

THE FILM

HERBERT. BARBARIAN IN THE GARDEN is a film composed of several different voices:

- exclusive and intimate interviews of people who were close to the artist. Among them Katarzyna Herbert, the poet's wife, who had never before agreed to take part in any documentary project dedicated to her husband. The words collected are the result of long conversations with the director.

- interviews with literature and history specialists, among them : the essayist and critic Alfred Alvarez, the poet Philippe Jaccottet, the writer and poet Edward Hirsch, the publisher Dan Halpern, the journalist Michael S. Cullen or the historian, journalist Adam Michnik.

- fragments from Herbert's work, read in Polish by the actor Andrzej Chyra, illustrated by unpublished archives - photographs, video archives, manuscripts of the poet.

Passionate about painting and ancient art, Herbert made all his life sketches and drawings. Animation sequences created by the french director Olivier Patté, helps them to come to life.

The documentary is also exploring the places that inspired Zbigniew Herbert’s life and art: the Scottish island of Iona, the Israeli fortress of Masada, Athens, Spoleto, Paris… Without forgetting the impressive paintings of the Prado in Madrid, to which the poet traveled in a wheelchair in the twilight of his life to see with his own eyes the masterpieces by Velázquez.

Zbigniew Herbert est l'une des figures humanistes majeures de l’Europe du XXe siècle.

En 1956, il devient, dès la publication de son premier recueil Corde de lumière, l'un des poètes les plus appréciés en Europe. Son œuvre, qui puise dans l’héritage des civilisations antiques pour mettre en valeur les liens d'une identité européenne commune, a joué un rôle colossal dans l’éveil des mentalités de l’Europe de l’Est et de l’Ouest à l’époque séparées par le rideau de fer.
Traduit dans plus de 40 langues, ses poèmes, maintes fois primés à travers le monde, se dressent comme des hymnes à la liberté, à la dignité humaine et aux valeurs humanistes. Plusieurs fois approché pour le Prix Nobel, Herbert nous a légué une œuvre immense, universelle, une œuvre qui aujourd'hui encore demeure une inspiration pour les artistes et les écrivains du monde entier. 

Plus de vingt ans après la disparition du poète, HERBERT. UN BARBARE DANS LE JARDIN est le premier long-métrage documentaire consacré à Zbigniew Herbert.

Ce projet, réalisé en étroite collaboration avec les héritiers du poète et la Fondation Zbigniew Herbert, est le résultat de plusieurs années de travail : plusieurs années de recherches, un tournage dans 11 pays et plus de 23 interviews filmées.

Nous voulons que son exploitation ait une dimension pédagogique pour les générations d’aujourd’hui et de demain, qu’elle soit une source de connaissances pour la culture polonaise et, plus largement, la culture européenne, une source de mémoire.
Pour qu'à l'heure où les nationalismes montent, chacun puisse se rappeler l'héritage d'un homme qui dédia sa vie à la recherche et mise en valeur des liens de notre héritage européen commun.

LE FILM

HERBERT, UN BARBARE DANS LE JARDIN est un film qui s’écrit à plusieurs voix.

- Entretiens inédits, intimes, des proches de l’artiste, parmi eux, Katarzyna Herbert, la veuve du poète, qui a accepté de prendre part à un documentaire consacré à son mari pour la première fois. Les propos recueillis sont le fruit de longues conversations avec le réalisateur, menées pendant plusieurs mois.

 - Des interviews de spécialistes dans le domaine de la littérature et de l'histoire – parmi lesquels l’essayiste et critique Alfred Alvarez, le poète Philippe Jaccottet, l’écrivain et poète Edward Hirsch, l’éditeur Dan Halpern, le journaliste Michael S. Cullen ou encore l'ancien historien, journaliste Adam Michnik.

- Des extraits de l'œuvre de Herbert, lus en polonais par le comédien Andrzej Chyra, ainsi que de nombreuses archives inédites – photographies, archives vidéo, manuscrits du poète.

Passionné de peinture et d’art antique, Herbert réalisait en permanence croquis et dessins. Sous la direction d’Olivier Patté, réalisateur de film d’animation, les œuvres d’Hebert prennent vie dans des séquences d'animation du documentaire.

L’équipe a également fait le pari de partir à la découverte des lieux ayant inspiré la vie et l’art de Zbigniew Herbert : L'île écossaise d'Iona, la forteresse israélienne de Masada, Athènes, Spoleto, Paris… Sans oublier les impressionnantes peintures du Prado de Madrid, que le poète a parcouru en fauteuil roulant au crépuscule de sa vie pour voir de ses propres yeux les chefs-d’œuvre de Velázquez.
