This movie tells the life of an African descent rastaman coming from the diaspora who chose Ghana to repatriate to Africa.

The story

The rastafari movement, Born in Jamaica, is nowadays an international movement. We can find different communities all over the world. Even though, it does exist Rastas from every origins, this movement first concerns the African descents deported during the European slave trade. It is an afrocentric movement which has a destiny intimately linked to the African continent. For the majority of the Rastas, the repatriation on the continent is the ultimate goal.

Almost the whole of the movies on Rastas describe their livity and talk about the spirituality of the movement and when they talk about the repatriation it’s mainly about Shashamane. Most of the persons who settled there were Rastas. In fact, Ethiopia is the first reference when we take an interest to the resettlement of the African descent Rastas on the continent.

Nowadays, it exists numerous rasta communities in Africa, such as in Ethiopia, in Ghana, in Togo, in Benin, in Burkina Faso or in Ivory Coast. For instance, the Jah family, who comes from Guadeloupe island, repatriated in Benin since 1997.

The Rasta community in Ghana is the most important on the African continent, but it is still widely unknown. Unlike the Shashamane, it is not mainly composed of African descents deported during the slave trade. The majority of its members are natives of the continent and this community attracts the Rastas of the frontaliers countries.

This movie allows to present another story and reveal through a rastafari community mainly composed of native Africans, how they integrated the rites and culture of rastafari and see what place the community gives to the repatriated Rastas.

The author

Rara, the author of the documentary is a caribean rasta from the French spoken community. The question of the repatriation to Africa holds an important place in his livity like many other Rastas before him. His first encounter with the Ghanian people took place in England where he is touched by their respect and benevolence towards Rastamen. Those meetings obsessed over the idea of repatriation to Ghana.
