À l’âge de 13 ans, alors qu’il n’est encore qu’un écolier anglais de province, l’auteur tombe amoureux de Paris en compulsant un livre de tableaux impressionnistes. Trois ans plus tard, il découvre Paris « pour de vrai », grâce à une bourse qui lui permet de venir faire un mois d’études dans un lycée de la capitale, et la séduction que la ville exerce sur lui ne fait que grandir. Enfin, cinq ans plus tard, il tombe amoureux d’une Parisienne et, en sa compagnie, il a enfin l’impression que Paris l’accepte et lui ouvre ses secrets…

Dans ce petit volume, il nous dévoile quelques-unes des anecdotes qu’il a découvertes en cherchant l’origine des noms de stations du métro parisien, et à travers lesquelles il a pris un grand plaisir à étudier l’histoire de France.

La station « Parmentier » l’incite à tout apprendre sur la pomme de terre, de ses débuts compliqués à son triomphe sur la famine. « Robespierre » lui donne envie de se replonger dans les annales de la Révolution. At the age of 13, when he was still a provincial schoolboy, the author fell in love with Paris when he discovered the paintings of the impressionists in books. Three years later, he was able to discover the city for himself, thanks to a grant which brought him to Paris for a month of studies in a lycée of the capital, a stay which left him more than ever under the spell of the city. Then, five years later still, he fell in love with a Parisienne and in her company came to feel that he finally belonged, and that Paris was revealing her secrets to him.

In this small volume, he explores numerous fascinating episodes of French history by telling the stories of various important figures, events, battles, etc., who have lent their names to Parisian metro stations.

The station “Parmentier” is an invitation to learn everything there is to know about the history of the potato, and its role in Napoleon’s triumphs; “Robespierre” leads him to delve into the annals of the French revolution. From “Pigalle” to “Voltaire”, he imagines some cantankerous exchanges between the sculptor and the great philosopher-writer, whom the artist insists on sculpting in the nude, despite his model’s protests about his “spindly legs”…

An amusing and enriching introduction to Paris and its history, through a wealth of tales and anecdotes recounted with humor, charm, and a touch of mischief.

The author:

Mark Crick, a photographer, illustrator and writer, is an English author and humorist whose series of clever literary pastiches – Kafka’s Soup, Sartre’s Sink, Machiavelli’s Garden, treating respectively cuisine, do-it-yourself, and gardening – had great success in France and in numerous other countries. The book garnered excellent press and some of the pastiches were read in the theatre by prominent French actors, in a series of well-attended performances.

The first book appeared in paperback in France, and more recently another paperback edition combined pastiches from all three books to make a new “best of” volume with favorites from all three collections.
